Environmental risk assessment of plant protection products
In the European Union, environmental risk assessments (ERA) are required by national and international chemical legislation for the market authorisation of plant protection products (PPP). Recently, new developments in European legislation effect the requirements for environmental risk assessments of pesticides and represent a big challenge for all stakeholders. Since the early 1990s the assessment of environmental risks of plant protection products is regulated in the European Union by Council Directive 91/414/EEC. This Directive will be replaced by Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 with effect from 2011. The new regulation forces a paradigm shift from a risk to a hazard based environmental risk assessment for the market placing of plant protection products.
